Amelia's Anthology of Illustration

Compiled, designed and published by Amelia Gregory of Amelia's Magazine fame. This new book features dozens of illustrations (by a selection of up and coming illustrators) that vividly bring to life a variety of yet-to-be-implemented contraptions and technologies that could provide renewable energy in the future. The book not only showcases illustration work along with interviews and profile pieces on each of the 40 featured illustrators, but also promotes clever ideas for renewable energy-creating technologies, with explanations of these concepts too. Here are some spreads from the 264 page hardback (first edition) tome.

The Making of Fantastic Mr. Fox

Angus Hyland was commissioned by Jacob Lehman at Rizzoli to design the book to accompany “Fantastic Mr Fox,” the latest film by Wes Anderson. The film is based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel, originally illustrated by Donald Chaffin. The book chronicles the making of the film adaptation, which uses stop-motion animation and features the voices of George Clooney as Mr. Fox, Meryl Streep as Mrs. Fox and Bill Murray as Badger. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

Harry Pearce and Jason Ching have designed a series of posters for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime that highlight the relative merits of drug treatment and rehabilitation around the world. The posters are a training tool specifically aimed at the Russian police, whose country has a particularly poor track record in drug treatment. The posters had to be eye-catching, easy to absorb and not reliant on language. The typographic solution built a simple world map from internationally recognised country abbreviation codes (GB, US, RU, etc). Eight variants were then designed, using colour coding and icons to provide comparative statistics around drug abuse, the incidence of HIV, Methadone and opioid maintenance therapies, and needle and syringe programmes. McDonald's: Honor Angus

Thursday morning, September 24, all 13 digital billboards in Kansas City began to display headlines written by local McDonald’s customers for the new Angus Third Pounders. The two-word headlines, along with the names of their authors, cycled in 10-second increments during this 24-hour market-wide roadblock. More than 5,000 customer-written headlines were received online at honorangus.com and via text -- about 2,000 of those ran.

Conceived and executed by McDonald’s regional advertising agency, Bernstein-Rein (Kansas City), Honor Angus is based on the agency’s local Angus Third Pounder launch campaign that featured punchy, two-word static billboards.

Guitar Hero

The new brand identity for Guitar Hero is designed to receive a limitless number of visual treatments. This one was commissioned from Rick Valicenti of 3st.

Today, Guitar Hero releases Guitar Hero 5, setting the stage for the next evolution of Activision’s business growth: the introduction later this fall of Band Hero and DJ Hero. This required the company to reexamine its overall brand identity for the first time. Activision enlisted Pentagram to assist in this effort.

Art and Copy

ART & COPY is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. Directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH, HYPE!), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time -- people who've profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising's "creative revolution" of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in ART & COPY were responsible for "Just Do It," "I Love NY," "Where's the Beef?," "Got Milk," "Think Different," and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them. Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.

Orba Squara

This multimedia band journal is really a phenomenal idea for a band. This site is promoting The Trouble with Flying, the latest album from musician Mitch Davis, aka Orba Squara. It documents the band on a 10-day 15 city tour, as a an online diary - a multimedia collage of photography, illustration, typography, music and film that, if laid out on paper, would measure 430 feet long.

A World Springs to Life on an Urban Wall

By ROBERTA SMITH

With their first public artwork in Manhattan, which went up at the northwest corner of Houston Street and the Bowery on July 17, the Brazilian brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo, who call themselves Os Gêmeos, bring graffiti art to its Rococo phase. Which is to say that their fantastic, epic mural, on a concrete wall about 17 feet high and about 51 feet long, is light and frothy, a dream of happiness with an underlying chord of melancholy. And everything in it is exquisitely fine-tuned and detailed, a dazzlement of effortless technique that sustains long bouts of close looking. It will remain up until March.

TCH Curated In-Flight Experience

"Strangely, airlines and airplanes and air travel continue to still look pretty much the same, no matter which airline you fly. In fact, most of us would say that the in-flight experience is getting worse each day. Premium-class prices warrant a slightly more tolerable experience, but it is still tough to really tell one experience from the other. An airplane is of course transportation, and not a hotel, spa or restaurant, but we have been waiting for a long time for the first airline that is willing to embark on true differentiation. Taking cues from cool architecture, leading-edge design and the vibes we see ahead of, and outside of, trends, The Coolhunter is now working on creating truly cool airline experiences, giving premium-class passengers a real reason to select one airline over another. Absolutely everything— from the on-board entertainment, furnishings and decor, to exclusive on-board shopping — will be curated by TCH. Rather than being mundane, boring and almost same as all other airlines, the TCH-curated in-flight experience will be really something worth talking about. Each flight will be different, each experience more surprising and exquisite." Airlines who want to ad value to their inflight experience, can contact catherine@thecoolhunter.net or bill@thecoolhunter.net

Virgin Atlantic exterior designed by Andy Gilmore

facade projection

"How it would be, if a house was dreaming"

"The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture - the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers "Galerie der Gegenwart". Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves - describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself." --- Production: urbanscreen.com
